The Nunnery of the Annunciation, also known as the Monastery of “Evangelismos,” is located on the southwest side of Chora, a 15-minute walk from the main bus stop. To reach the monastery, follow the road from Chora to Grikos and take a right at the first major crossroads, followed by another right onto the uphill road. The monastery will come into view after the last turn. Alternatively, if you prefer walking, there is a sign-posted road from Chora to the monastery, which takes about 10 minutes.

History of the Monastery

Originally a small hermitage church, the monastery underwent renovations in 1613 under the guidance of Abbot Nikiforos from the monastery of Saint John. It was then dedicated to Saint Luke the Evangelist. In 1937, additional buildings were constructed by the monk Amfilohios Makris, who established the Monastery of the Annunciation. The icons and frescoes found within the monastery date back to the 15th to 17th centuries. The monastery played a significant role during the Italian occupation, as the nuns were actively involved in teaching the Greek language to young children.
