Holy Seats (Kathismata) of Patmos

When you read the words “Holy Seats,” you may think of something like a “Holy Chair,” but it is not like this! Under the name “Holy Seats” (“Kathismata” in Greek) in the area of ​​Patmos are what we refer to places where monks from the Monasteries of the island used to stay and pray during the old times, practicing asceticism. These “Kathismata” were made from the 11th century AD to the 17th century AD.

The History of the Holy Seats

The Holy Seats at the beginning used to be a humble ditch on a rock or a cave, in which the monks made a cell, often a small church. Over the years, besides the small church, other auxiliary buildings were added and more cells for monks. Many of these Holy Seats became separate little monasteries.

The Holy Seats of Today

Nowadays, some of them have monks, while some do not. However, all the Holy Seats in Patmos deserve your visit, as they are an interesting part of the history and spirituality of Patmos. You can visit some of them through the hiking trails of the island, combining the mild exercise with the spiritual tranquility.
