The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi of Patmos
The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, which translates to “the life-giving source,” was established in 1607 by Saint Parthenios Pankostas, the abbot of the Monastery of St John the Theologian, under the patriarch Timothy the 2nd. It is situated southwest of the prominent Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, and can be reached by following a sign-posted road from Chora.
Miraculous Church
The two-storey church within the monastery is adorned with frescoes dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Its iconostasis, crafted in the 16th century, is a notable feature. The icon of “Panagia Eleoussa” (The Holy Mother of Mercy) housed in the church is considered miraculous, with the first recorded miracle dating back to 1956. The monastery was officially inaugurated in 2007. Additionally, a small museum within the monastery displays sacred vessels.
The Monastery Today
Currently, fifteen nuns engage in the art of fine needlework and embroidery of clerical vestments. They are also involved in social welfare activities, as the monastery was established to provide shelter for widows, orphans, and individuals with disabilities. These nuns adhere to strict rules. The monastery celebrates Easter Friday, and its visiting hours are from 08:00 to 12:00 am and from 17:00 to 19:30 pm daily (except Saturday afternoons). Please note that proper attire is required when entering the monastery—men should wear long-legged trousers, while women should wear a long skirt and a sleeved T-shirt.
