Holy Seats (Kathismata) of Patmos
When you read the words “Holy Seats,” you may think of something like a “Holy Chair,” but it is not like this! Under the name “Holy Seats” (“Kathismata” in Greek), in the area of Patmos, these are places where monks from the Monasteries of the island used to stay and pray during the old times, practicing asceticism. These “Kathismata” were constructed between the 11th and 17th centuries AD.
The History of the Holy Seats
Originally, the Holy Seats were humble ditches on rocks or caves, where the monks would establish their cells, often transforming them into small churches.
